Spiraea tomentosa
Our native spiraea and the species for which historic Steepletop in Austerlitz is named, this beautiful shrub is noted for its showy pink spires of flowers and attractive autumn colors. Unlike non-native spiraea, the overall bush form is upright. Also called hardhack, this shrub prefers wetland habitats and does well in rain gardens. Populations are declining due to development and associated wetland destruction. Host plant to Spring Azure and Columbia silkmoth caterpillars.
