Morus rubra
Native to the Northeastern and Southern states, the fruit of Red Mulberry trees begin to ripen in June. The fruits are nearly black when ripe, and are sweet and delicious! Laying a tarp down under the tree can be the most effective way of harvesting ripe fruits, which are also an important food source for spring migrating birds and small mammals. Red Mulberry is the larval host to the Mourning Cloak butterfly.Â
