Vernonia noveboracensis
New York Ironweed fills a unique niche in gardens of the Hudson Valley, as it is juglone tolerant and deer resistant. An excellent nectar source, it is recognized by the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation for its special value to native bees. Clusters of purple flowers nod atop the 5-7’ tall stems in early autumn, followed by seed heads that provide winter forage for birds. It prefers wet soil, but is tolerant of a variety of conditions. New York Ironweed has been used as anti-inflammatory medicine and to treat gastrointestinal irregularities by the Cherokee.
