Vernonia noveboracensis
New York Ironweed fills a unique niche in gardens of the Hudson Valley, as it is juglone tolerant and deer-resistant. An excellent nectar source, it is recognized by the Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation for its special value to native bees. Clusters of purple flowers nod atop the 5-7’ tall stems in early autumn, followed by seed heads that provide winter forage for birds. It prefers wet soil, but is tolerant of a variety of conditions. New York Ironweed has been used as anti-inflammatory medicine and to treat gastrointestinal irregularities by the Cherokee.
