Polystichum achrostichoides
This native fern retains its clusters of green fronds through winter and is noted for its year-round interest in the landscape. In spring, silver fiddleheads emerge from the center of the front clusters, but they aren’t considered edible. It is easy to grow and can help with erosion if situated in the proper conditions: shady, cool, well-drained and moist soil. Typically found in rich woods, stream banks, and thickets. Full sun causes stress and potential mortality. It clumps rather than spreads through rhizomes. Christmas fern attracts wild grouse and is considered resistant to deer and rabbit browse. Use as a border or accent plant.
