Baptisia australis

This shrubby perennial has attractive round, blue-green leaves and stalks of deep purple pea-like flowers. In fact, it is part of the pea family, making it a nitrogen fixer. It will benefit the soil and other surrounding plants. It will spend its first year establishing its taproot, but then its upright shrubby branches will thrive for years to come with almost no effort. Somewhat of an early bloomer, the flowers come out in late spring and host many insects and butterflies. Birds enjoy eating the seeds throughout the winter. Larval host to the Wild Indigo Duskywing (skipper).
