Betula nigra
The river birch can be identified by its characteristic exfoliating bark which is used by many species of birds, bats and insects. Often forked, multi-trunked, with graceful slightly weeping branches and an irregular crown, these beautiful native trees are tolerant of often difficult conditions such as part shade and high moisture levels. Because it thrives in moist conditions, river birch can be used for erosion control. It is fast-growing, long-lived, and experiences few pest or disease problems.
