Andropogon gerardii
Big Bluestem is a warm season perennial bunchgrass with blue-green stems native to much of the US. It was once abundant in the prairies of central North America, and it is one of the “Big Four” grass species of the prairies, along with Indiangrass, Switchgrass and Little Bluestem . Having co-evolved with migratory bison who graze seasonally, it will die if cut back too much during the growing season – by a mower, or by the cattle whose grazing has changed American prairies. Big Bluestem provides cover, nesting sites, and/or food source for over 24 species of birds including songbirds, sparrows, Sedge Wrens and Western Meadowlarks, is larval host to several skipper species, and is considered deer-resistant.
