Tilia americana
American Linden, also called Basswood and Lime-tree, is a beautiful large tree native to the woodlands of eastern North America. It is often planted as a shade tree in urban areas due to its fast growth and stately form. It has heart-shaped leaves that are edible when young, and fragrant white flowers that are known for their cooling and relaxing properties. American Linden flowers, bark, leaves and fruit support many different insects, birds and mammals. American Linden is a larval host plant to a huge number of moth and butterfly species, including the Red Spotted Purple Butterfly.
