Quercus alba

Oaks support the most biodiversity out of any other group of trees, and White Oak is no exception. White Oaks offer food and habitat to a wide range of wildlife: including deer, birds, bears, and beneficial insects. Because the acorns of White Oak are lower in tannins, they tend to be sweeter and more palatable. White Oak is a prized lumber tree, and is preferred wood for barrels used to age wine and whiskey due to a structure in the xylem called tyloses, which plug up the pores and make it water resistant. White Oak is the larval host to the Edwardโ€™s Hairstreak butterfly.ย
