A beautiful Red-shouldered Hawk (Buteo lineatus) in winter. An amazing creature that helps us control the voles that munch on our young trees! Thanks to our friend @spencrawf for pointing out this is the rarer Red-shouldered Hawk, not the more common Red-tailed Hawk, as we originally thought.

Final chestnut planting of the year, in the snow! We’re very happy to have precipitation again after a very dry fall. And snow has the added benefit of slowly releasing nitrogen, trace elements, and moisture into the soil. Fall is a great time to plant bare-root trees.

The bare-root harvest is completed! Thousands of young trees are now safely heeled in to our upgraded “Fort Knox” area designed to keep rabbits, voles, groundhogs and other critters away from the sensitive young trees as they lay dormant awaiting spring plantings. Place your orders online now for Spring ‘25. Shipping and farm pickup will occur in early April. Oh, and thankfully, it’s finally raining!

Agroforestry: A Natural Climate Solution
Integrating trees and perennial plants with livestock and annual crops can increase a farm’s productivity and profitability over time. It makes the land more resilient to increasingly volatile weather associated with climate change. It also makes farming more sustainable and in balance with nature. Our bare-root nursery provides the highest quality trees, shrubs, and perennial wildflowers. Our biochar enhances soil structure, fosters beneficial microbes, and sequesters carbon. And our design expertise keeps the land whole. Find out more about how we can help your farm grow.
