Adiantum pedatum
Dark green, shiny fronds spread in a nearly perfect circle, providing shelter for toads and lizards in a unique pattern among native ferns. Stems are used in basketry. Colonizes with relative ease moist, cool woods and shaded areas with rich soil. Maidenhair fern will not survive drying out and must be kept moist year-round. Burgundy red fiddleheads appear in early spring and are generally not considered edible. Various parts of the plant have been used for medicine by the Haudenosaunee, Cherokee and others.
